Background
The Rams hired him after Tommy Prothro was dismissed on January 24, 1973. Nicknamed 'Ground Chuck' for his run-first teams, he went 12-2 in his first season, won the NFC West and was NFC Coach of the Year, while quarterback John Hadl was the conference MVP. He traded Hadl to Green Bay in 1974 and started James Harris, the NFL's first black regular starting quarterback, going 12-2 again in 1975, but his teams kept losing in the playoffs.
