Background and promotion

Linkin Park went on indefinite hiatus after Chester Bennington's death on July 20, 2017. Mike Shinoda stated in January 2018 that he intended for the band to continue, and in June 2018 he released his debut solo studio album, Post Traumatic, under his own name. Shinoda, Joe Hahn, and Dave Farrell resumed working on new music in 2019 without public announcement, later joined by Brad Delson; founding drummer Rob Bourdon chose not to participate. The band met Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong in 2019 and began working with her and drummer Colin Brittain.

On April 28, 2020, Farrell revealed the band was working on new music. Over the next three years, the band released 20th-anniversary reissues of Hybrid Theory and Meteora with previously unreleased material featuring Bennington's vocals, and a greatest hits album, Papercuts, on April 12, 2024, containing one unreleased song with Bennington's vocals from the One More Light sessions. On March 30, 2024, Orgy frontman Jay Gordon sparked reunion rumors, claiming the band had recruited a new female singer.

Billboard later reported that WME was taking offers for a potential reunion tour with Shinoda, Delson, Farrell, and an unnamed female vocalist. In August, the band launched a 100-hour countdown, then released a statement hinting at a major announcement. An invite to the fan club revealed a five-hour event on September 5, 2024, in Los Angeles.

Touring

The From Zero World Tour began at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on September 11, 2024, six days after a live show at RED Studios, and concluded at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil on November 16, 2024. The band debuted new singles "The Emptiness Machine", "Heavy Is the Crown", "Over Each Other", and album deep-cut "Casualty", and performed two songs from The Hunting Party live for the first time: "Keys to the Kingdom" and "All for Nothing" with Helmet frontman Page Hamilton.

On November 14, 2024, the band announced a 2025 stadium tour beginning January 31 at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City, concluding on November 11, 2025, in Brasília, Brazil. Several South American dates were cancelled for logistical reasons. The tour marked the band's first performance at Wembley Stadium and featured supporting acts including Queens of the Stone Age, Spiritbox, AFI, Pvris, Architects, Grandson, Jean Dawson, and JPEGMafia. Mike Shinoda later revealed plans for a co-headlining tour with My Chemical Romance fell through due to scheduling conflicts.

Critical reception

From Zero received generally positive reviews from critics. Neil Z. Yeung of Allmusic called it a decent effort containing the band's hallmarks. Anne Erickson of Blabbermouth.net wrote that the album's most successful parts are songs that do not sound like classic Linkin Park, and that it should bring new fans while appealing to longtime fans. Clash described it as an opinion-splitting return with soaring highs and disappointing lows.

Alexis Petridis of The Guardian stated the band was always unafraid to take sonic risks and that the comeback had paid off handsomely. Helen Brown of The Independent felt there was nothing revolutionary about the album but called it a re-energised return. Luke Morton of Kerrang! wrote that not every song is memorable and not everyone will accept a new singer, but the album reminds why Linkin Park reached their heights. Jordan Blum of Metal Injection found the record extremely successful at recapturing the group's magic with enough newness.

Merlin Alderslade of Metal Hammer called it an earnest tribute to the band's own legacy. Donovan Livesey of MusicOMH described it as compact and intense. Rishi Shah of NME called it one of rock's biggest comeback albums, mixing sensational stadium rock with tired songwriting. James Hall of The Daily Telegraph called it solid and uncompromising.

Commercial performance

From Zero debuted at number one in 14 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. In the UK, it topped the Albums Chart, the band's first number one there since Living Things, selling 37,826 total units in its first week (23,149 physical copies, 4,474 digital downloads, 10,203 streaming units). It was denied the top spot on the UK Albums Streaming Chart by Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet.

The album spent eight consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart, was certified Silver in December 2024 for 60,000 units, and Gold in April 2025 for 100,000 units. The deluxe edition re-entered the UK Albums Chart at number 23 with 4,293 copies. In Australia, it debuted atop the ARIA Albums Chart, the band's fourth studio album to do so and first since A Thousand Suns. In Germany, it debuted at number one, was certified Gold in its first week for over 75,000 copies, and was streamed over 23 million times, a record for a band in the country.

The band became the first to secure three of the top five spots on the German Singles Chart with "The Emptiness Machine" (1), "Heavy Is the Crown" (3), and "Two Faced" (5). In the US, From Zero debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 97,000 album-equivalent units (72,000 pure sales, 32.18 million streams), behind Ateez's Golden Hour: Part.2. It topped the Top Rock Albums, Top Alternative Albums, and Top Hard Rock Albums charts, and the band occupied the entire top ten of the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart with eligible songs.

By May 2025, the album had sold 383,000 album-equivalent units in the US. The deluxe edition re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 71 with 14,000 units.
