Background

The film's score was created by Alec Puro of Deadsy, along with Linkin Park members Chester Bennington, Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, Joe Hahn, and Mike Shinoda. Joe Hahn's first directorial effort, titled "The Seed," features a soundtrack with three songs. One of these, "There They Go" by Fort Minor, originally from the album "The Rising Tied," plays during the credits. The other two tracks, which are untitled, accompany the fight scenes.

There was a rumor that the soundtrack would include several Linkin Park songs, some from their upcoming album "The Hunting Party," but this turned out to be incorrect. The soundtrack was released on December 12, 2014, through Warner Bros. and Machine Shop records. During a Twitter Q&A, Joe Hahn stated that the movie and its score were finished, and they were looking for a distributor to release it soon. A two-minute trailer for the film, released on May 28, 2014, featured a song called "It Goes Through," with lead vocals by Shinoda, which was speculated to be the soundtrack's first single.

On September 16, 2014, the track "The Last Line," originally titled "Ammosick" and also known as "Mall (Theme song)," was released on YouTube with a download link, and was also shared on the film's official page. On October 15, 2014, the band confirmed that "White Noise" plays during the opening credits of "Mall." Two days later, on October 17, 2014, the full-length version of "White Noise" was made available as a free digital download on the official "Mall" website and the band's website, and it can also be found on the band's official YouTube channel.

Recording

The soundtrack's songs and score were created between 2011 and 2013. The band worked on this project at the same time as their fifth studio album, Living Things (2012), as well as their second remix album, Recharged (2013). Some recording sessions also overlapped with work on their sixth album, The Hunting Party (2014). Several tracks are remastered versions of earlier demos the band had already recorded.

"Devil's Drop," originally called "Warm Spell," started as a demo during the Living Things sessions. "It Goes Through," first known as "Luna," was a demo from an EP Shinoda wrote for Dell's LP Stagelight. "White Noise" began as a demo during the making of The Hunting Party. "The Last Line" originated as a demo from the band's third album, Minutes to Midnight (2007), and was later revisited for their fourth album, A Thousand Suns (2010); it was eventually released as a digital download, as confirmed on the official Mall Facebook page.
