Background and promotion

Recharged was announced on the band's Facebook page on September 12, 2013, the same day their game LP Recharge was released. The album includes reinterpretations of ten songs from Living Things, plus the new song with Steve Aoki, "A Light That Never Comes" (and a remix of it). Five of the remixes had previously been released as part of a pre-order promotion for Living Things called Living Things Remixed, which gave pre-order customers a remix each month for eight months.

A limited-edition version of the album was made available exclusively from the band's website, containing an interactive 3D sculpture based on the Living Things album artwork, a 48-page art booklet, both Living Things and Recharged albums, and a magnetic stylus to interact with the liquid solution in the sculpture. Pre-orders began on September 16. On September 13, Shinoda posted the track list on Facebook and noted that pre-orders from the band's website would receive an exclusive digital download of Paul van Dyk's remix of "Burn It Down", previously part of Living Things Remixed.

The album could be heard in its entirety on MTV.com as of October 24, 2013, five days before its official release. On January 21, 2014, an EP titled "A Light That Never Comes (Remixes)" was released online.

Critical reception

NME described Recharged as "further proof" that dubstep and EDM is nu metal's successor, characterizing the songs as "nosebleed drum'n'bass, 8-bit blips and oversized dancehall bass" and adding that Rick Rubin's final remix of "A Light That Never Comes" saves the album from disaster. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave it 3 out of 5 stars, stating that the album appeals primarily to hardcore fans and is unlikely to convert EDM listeners to Linkin Park.
