Geologically, the Tinajani Basin is an intermontane pull-apart basin created by strike-slip movement along regional faults starting in the late Oligocene and ending in the late Miocene. Lacustrine sediments of the Lower Tinajani Formation demonstrate the presence of an ancestral Lake Titicaca between 18 and 14 million years ago.
