Lake Nicaragua—also called Cocibolca, Granada, Mar Dulce, or simply the Great Lake—is a freshwater lake in Nicaragua. It formed through tectonic activity and covers 8,264 square kilometers (3,191 square miles), making it Central America’s largest freshwater lake, the world’s 19th largest by area, and the tenth largest in the Americas (just a bit smaller than Lake Titicaca). Its surface sits 32.7 meters (107 feet) above sea level, and its maximum depth is 26 meters (85 feet). The lake gets an occasional boost from the Tipitapa River, which flows in only when nearby Lake Managua is high. Water leaves Lake Nicaragua via the San Juan River, which runs east to the Caribbean Sea. Because of this outlet, the city of Granada—on the lake’s northwest shore—once served as an Atlantic port, even though both the city and the lake lie closer to the Pacific Ocean. In fact, from the mountains on Ometepe, the lake’s largest island, you can see the Pacific on a clear day.

Even though it’s a freshwater lake, Lake Nicaragua hosts sawfish, tarpon, and sharks. Scientists first thought the sharks were a unique endemic species—the Lake Nicaragua shark (*Carcharhinus nicaraguensis*)—but in 1961, comparisons with specimens showed they were actually bull sharks (*C. leucas*), a species known for entering freshwater worldwide. It was long assumed the sharks were trapped inside the lake, but in the late 1960s researchers discovered they could leap along the rapids of the San Juan River, much like salmon, to reach the Caribbean Sea. Tagged bull sharks from the lake have later been caught in the open ocean, and vice versa, with some making the trip in as little as seven days. None are exclusive to Lake Nicaragua, though *Amphilophus labiatus* lives only in this lake and Lake Managua. During the California Gold Rush of the late 1840s, traveling up the San Juan River, across the lake, and then over a short land stretch was one of the two preferred ways to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific (the other being the overland route through Panama), since crossing the continental U.S. by land before the transcontinental railroad was too dangerous. Until Ometepe Airport was built, the only way to reach that island was by boat. The Solentiname Islands are still accessible only by water. Before a fully paved road reached San Carlos, the lake also served as the main transport link for that area.
