Lore & Background

Riko agreed to coach the newly formed team after its members shouted from the school rooftop that they would become the best team in Japan. She later sets the same rooftop declaration as an entrance exam for the first-years. Her father, Kagetora Aida, once played for a Japanese professional basketball team and has the same ability to estimate a person's capability by sight; she uses his sports facilities to devise training programs.

Reader's Guide

Early in the story Riko arranges a practice match with Kaijo and, during the Inter-High preliminaries, takes the team to watch Shutoku when too much confidence is brewing. After the Inter-High she holds three days of practice matches to evaluate each player and announces summer training camps at the beach and in the mountains. At the beach she has the team practice on sand to build leg strength and sets up evening practice matches against Shutoku. Before the Winter Cup her father, Kagetora, runs a training camp to develop the players' individual skills.
