Stardust Crusaders Arc
A desperate journey from Japan to Egypt to save Holly Kujo before her Stand kills her.
Stardust Crusaders is the third story arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1989 across volumes 13–28 (152 chapters). In 1983, Dio Brando—now called DIO—has his coffin salvaged from the ocean, but he does not fully awaken until 1989. Because DIO had taken over Jonathan Joestar's body, Stands awaken in Jonathan's descendants, including Joseph Joestar, his daughter Holly Kujo, and his grandson Jotaro Kujo. Holly, however, cannot control her own Stand, which begins to slowly kill her. Jotaro, Joseph, and their allies set out to defeat DIO before Holly's Stand takes her life, fighting off DIO's henchmen along the way.

The narrative follows Jotaro Kujo, Joseph Joestar, and their allies as they travel from Japan to Egypt, battling DIO's Stand-using henchmen. The arc is set in 1989, with the party racing against time as Holly Kujo's uncontrolled Stand slowly kills her. The story concludes with the confrontation in Cairo, where DIO is ultimately defeated. DIO's coffin was salvaged in 1983, but he fully awakened in 1989.

Production Timeline
The second season of the anime adaptation, dedicated to the third part of the manga known as Stardust Crusaders, was officially confirmed in October 2013 through Weekly Shōnen Jump and a specific tankōbon volume release. Following a tease during the post-credit scenes of the previous finale, production moved forward under David Production. The initial run commenced on Tokyo MX in April 2014 and concluded in September of that same year. A subsequent continuation followed later, broadcasting from January through June 2015.
In total, this specific arc required forty-eight episodes to fully adapt the narrative within the television format. This extended production schedule highlighted the significance placed on this particular story segment compared to earlier seasons which covered multiple parts in fewer episodes. The consistent scheduling ensured dedicated fans could follow the Joestar family's journey across generations without significant interruption between major plot points during those broadcast years.
Distribution And Censorship
Regarding content presentation, the Japanese broadcast included specific modifications to comply with local regulations. Broadcasters modified specific content for compliance; instances showing minors smoking received censorship via black shadow overlays. Despite these adjustments, international audiences received the series through various digital platforms shortly after its original airing. International access was facilitated by Crunchyroll starting in 2014, which streamed content globally merely sixty minutes after the Japanese airing concluded.
This immediate availability helped maintain global engagement with the storyline as it unfolded weekly. In North America, distribution rights were managed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Viz Media, though specific home media releases varied between DVD and Blu-Ray formats depending on the region. The series eventually found a cable television home in the United States through Adult Swim's Toonami programming block beginning in October 2016.
This multi-platform approach ensured that the Stardust Crusaders narrative reached diverse demographics across different continents, solidifying its place within the broader anime market landscape during the mid-2010s era of streaming growth.
Events And Continuity
Following the conclusion of the broadcast run, promotional events were held to celebrate the completion of this specific arc. In October 2015, an event titled Last Crusaders was organized specifically for Stardust Crusaders fans. During this gathering, producers officially announced a third season covering the fourth part of the manga, Diamond Is Unbreakable. This announcement demonstrated the franchise's commitment to continuing the narrative immediately after finishing the current storyline.
The success of the anime adaptation as a whole was credited by several critics for bringing about a surge in popularity amongst Western audiences during this timeframe. Additionally, an original video animation adapting spin-off stories was released to people who purchased all thirteen Japanese DVD or Blu-ray volumes of the subsequent season. This strategy encouraged physical media collection among dedicated fans. The momentum from these events ensured that production remained active, leading to further announcements for Golden Wind and Stone Ocean in later years.
Each milestone served as a testament to the enduring interest in the Joestar family saga across different generations of viewers worldwide.
Future Evolution
The production trajectory established during this era influenced how future seasons were released globally. Later adaptations, such as Stone Ocean, shifted distribution models entirely to streaming services like Netflix for worldwide release starting in December 2021. This marked a significant evolution from the traditional Tokyo MX broadcast model used for Stardust Crusaders. By March 2026, the series had accumulated a total of one hundred ninety-one episodes across all seasons.
A sixth season covering Steel Ball Run was announced at a promotional event in April 2025 and premiered on Netflix with an extended forty-seven-minute first episode. This shift indicates how the franchise adapted to changing media consumption habits over time. While Stardust Crusaders aired traditionally, later parts utilized direct-to-streaming strategies. Initial transmissions occurred via Tokyo MX prior to wider syndication across networks including MBS and Animax, establishing a standard for extensive coverage.
Ultimately, the journey from traditional television broadcasting to global streaming platforms reflects the growing international demand for Hirohiko Araki's work following the initial anime adaptation success in 2012.
