A man who used the Stone Mask to become a vampire and sought to dominate the world.

Dio Brando is the primary antagonist of the first part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Phantom Blood, and a recurring threat throughout the series. Originally a human from a poor background, he is adopted into the Joestar family and develops a deep rivalry with Jonathan Joestar. After being thwarted in his plans to usurp Jonathan's inheritance, Dio uses an ancient Stone Mask to transform himself into a vampire. His ambition shifts to world domination, and he later resurfaces in the third part, Stardust Crusaders, having taken over Jonathan's body and awakened a Stand ability called The World, which allows him to stop time. His actions set the stage for the generational conflict that defines the first six parts of the series.

Dio Brando first appears in late 19th-century England as the adopted brother of Jonathan Joestar. He loathes Jonathan and plans to usurp his position as heir to the Joestar family. When his attempts are thwarted, Dio transforms himself into a vampire using an ancient Stone Mask and destroys the Joestar estate. Jonathan embarks on a journey to stop Dio, mastering the Hamon martial arts technique, but Dio's goal of world domination persists.

After Jonathan's death, Dio's coffin is salvaged from the ocean in 1983, and he awakens in 1985, now referred to as simply "DIO." Because Dio had taken over Jonathan's body, Stands awaken in Jonathan's descendants, including Jotaro Kujo. Dio's Stand, The World, allows him to stop time, and he commands an army of Stand-using henchmen from his base in Cairo. He is ultimately defeated by Jotaro Kujo, with Joseph Joestar incapacitated and his blood used by Dio after Dio has already fought Jotaro and others, and is destroyed by sunlight.

His legacy continues through his son, Giorno Giovanna, who is conceived while Dio possessed Jonathan's body, and through his loyalist Enrico Pucci, who seeks to create a new universe shaped to Dio's will.
