Plot

Karin Kokubu is late for school when she finds a yellow pig that appears injured but is only hungry; after eating her apple, the pig recovers. At Sei Ringo Gakuen, the pig stows away in her backpack, causing trouble with her teacher Makoto Arashiyama. Later, Karin learns the pig can talk and fly. He gives her a Dream Tonpact; when she opens it, a pig snout attaches to her nose. The pig, Prince Tonrariano the 3rd from the planet Buringo, explains that by saying Ba Bi Bu Be Burin she transforms into a superpowered pink piglet called Tonde Burin. Karin dislikes this form, preferring to become a magical girl like her idol Cutey Chao. Tonrariano tells her that if she collects 108 pearls by doing good deeds as Burin, she can achieve that wish. The pearl system operates on karma: abusing her powers causes her to lose pearls. Whenever someone is in danger, Karin becomes Tonde Burin to help.

Characters

Karin Kokubu is a 13-year-old 7th-grade girl who meets Tonrariano the 3rd and becomes Tonde Burin, the Pig Girl of Love and Courage. She must collect 108 pearls through good deeds to gain a different hero form, but if anyone discovers her identity she will remain a pig forever. Karin has a crush on Koichi Mizuno, who likes Burin, and enjoys painting. Tonrariano the 3rd is a yellow pig prince from Buuringo, son of Tonrariano the 2nd, who came to Earth for a trial to become king. He chooses Karin as Burin, lives in her room, and acts as her advisor; he can fly and sometimes dresses as Tonde Burin when needed. Masami Yamakawa is Karin's best friend, on the tennis team, who encourages her in love and other matters and has a crush on Hiromi Kashiwagi. Kaoru Hidaka is the class cutie with a shy, fearful personality; she is an expert cook who prepares refreshments for the soccer team.

Media

Polish, Italian, and other translated versions of the Saban dub aired in various countries including South America, Germany, Brazil, Russia, Spain, Portugal, and Israel. A separate English dub titled Super Boink aired only in the Philippines, retaining all original music. The manga adaptation Tonde Burin by Taeko Ikeda was serialized in Ciao from October 1994 to September 1995 and collected into three volumes by Shogakukan's Flower Comics label, released in April 1995, August 1995, and October 1995.
