Record 15 nations competed; Canada won its eighth world title, while host Switzerland won its second European championship.

Last updated

The 1935 Ice Hockey World Championships were held from January 19 to January 27, 1935, at the Eisstadion Davos in Davos, Switzerland. A record 15 countries took part, making it the largest world championship field up to that time. The tournament featured a preliminary round, a semifinal round, a consolation round for positions 9 through 15, and a final round for the top four teams.

Background

The 1935 tournament introduced a new format: four preliminary round groups (three groups of four and one group of three), with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinal round. Unlike the previous year, Canada participated in the preliminary round. The remaining seven teams entered a consolation round to determine positions 9 through 15.

In the semifinal round, two groups of four teams were formed; the top two from each advanced to the final round, while the others played for positions 5 through 8. Notably, teams in semifinal Group A jointly decided not to play extra time. In the consolation round for 5th to 8th places, France and Italy agreed by common agreement not to play the classification match for seventh place because of too many injured players on both teams.
