United States men's national ice hockey team

Team USA is a Big Six nation with three Olympic golds.

Last updated

USA Hockey governs the United States men's national ice hockey team, which competes internationally under the name Team USA.[1][2] In June 2026, the IIHF World Rankings placed the team in 3rd position.[2] Olympic gold medals were secured by Team USA in 1960, 1980, and 2026.[3]

Life and work

In 1933, the United States won its first IIHF World Championship title when the Massachusetts Rangers defeated Canada in Prague.[4] The team's greatest success was the "Miracle on Ice" at the 1980 Winter Olympics, where American college players defeated the Soviet Union on the way to a gold medal.[5] The US earned a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics with a roster including NHL stars.[6] In 2014, T.J. Oshie went 4-for-6 in shootout attempts to help Team USA beat Russia 3-2.[7]

The United States captured its first standalone World Championship since 1933 in 2025, with Tage Thompson scoring the overtime winner.[8] During the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, the United States beat Canada in a best-of-three final to claim the championship.[9][10] Mike Richter, a goaltender, was selected as the tournament's most valuable player for his play in the 1996 World Cup.[10]

What the cited sources add

An NHL.com account notes that the 1996 World Cup lineup for each team was full of future Hockey Hall of Famers.[10] The same source states that Mike Richter made 35 saves in each of the final two games of the 1996 World Cup.[10] A 2024 RMNB article states that Oshie's performance secured Team USA a bye into the tournament's quarterfinals.[7] The USA Hockey website for the 1932 Lake Placid Olympics confirms that Canada won gold, the United States took silver, and Germany claimed bronze.[11]

A 2014 CNN report explains that international shootout rules permit a player to take multiple shots after the initial three attempts, a rule that enabled T. J. Oshie to shoot repeatedly.[12] According to the CNN report, T. J. Oshie beat Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky on three of his five extra shootout attempts.[12]
