Insidious: The Red Door

Insidious: The Red Door is a 2023 American supernatural horror film. It marks Patrick Wilson's directorial debut, with a screenplay by Scott Teems based on a story co-written by Teems and Leigh Whannell. The movie is a direct follow-up to *Insidious: Chapter 2* (2013) and serves as the fifth entry in the *Insidious* series. Screen Gems, Blumhouse, and Stage 6 produced it. Original director James Wan and Jason Blum (via his Blumhouse Productions) served as producers. Returning cast members include Wilson, Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne, Andrew Astor, Steve Coulter, Joseph Bishara, Whannell, Angus Sampson, and Lin Shaye. Sinclair Daniel and Hiam Abbass joined the cast. After *Insidious: The Last Key* (2018), Blumhouse explored options for more films, including a possible crossover with the *Sinister* series. In October 2020, the studio announced Wilson would direct and star, with Teems writing the script based on a story he developed with Whannell. The production budget was $16 million. Filming took place in August 2022 in Morris County and Madison, New Jersey, near Jersey City. The film premiered in New York on June 27, 2023, and was released in U.S. theaters on July 7, 2023, by Sony Pictures Releasing. Critics gave it mixed reviews. It earned over $189 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. It received a nomination for Best Horror Film at the 51st Saturn Awards. In 2019, nine years after his possession, Josh Lambert has repressed his memories of The Further. He is divorced from his wife Renai, and his mother Lorraine has recently died. His relationship with his 19-year-old son Dalton is strained. While dropping Dalton off at college, Josh tries to mend things but they end up in conflict. In his first art class, Dalton draws a picture of the red door that leads to The Further. Josh begins seeing the ghost of a man, eventually learning it is his father, Ben Burton, who Josh believed abandoned the family when he was young. Dalton attends a frat party with his roommate Chris, where he sees the ghost of a constantly vomiting student. After accidentally entering The Further again, Chris shows Dalton a YouTube video by Specs and Tucker explaining astral projection, which includes a clip of Elise Rainier discussing The Further. Dalton tries to astral project again while Chris watches over his body.
