Set in 2007, three years before the Lambert haunting, the story follows teenager Quinn Brenner. She seeks out retired demonologist Elise Rainier to contact her deceased mother, Lily. Elise reluctantly agrees but warns Quinn off after sensing a malevolent presence. Quinn later sees a mysterious figure, is distracted, and gets hit by a car, breaking both legs. While recovering at home with her father, Sean, and brother, Alex, she experiences paranormal activity and visions of a dark spirit called the Man Who Can't Breathe. Sean eventually convinces Elise to help, despite her own grief and fear of a spirit called the Bride in Black. Elise enters the Further, battles the Man Who Can't Breathe, and with help from the spirit of Quinn's mother, Quinn defeats the entity by pulling off its mask. Elise, Specs, and Tucker then agree to work together. Afterward, a red-faced demon watches Elise unseen.
