In Pittsburgh, 1999, young Gemma Hall witnesses her mother Ingrid die by suicide after a mental breakdown. Two decades later, Gemma, now a single mother and dental hygienist, raises her daughter Maya in the same home. Gemma discovers she can astral project and transport objects between the Further and the material world, making her a 'courier.' She is guided by Elise Rainer, who explains that a blindfolded cult leader named Cyrus Lam plans to use Gemma to resurrect spirits. Gemma learns that her mother was also a courier and killed herself to protect Gemma from Cyrus. With help from Clare, another astral projector, and Nick, a police officer, Gemma attempts to stop Cyrus. Cyrus uses Maya to bring dozens of followers into the real world, but Gemma transports the entire house into the Further, where Cyrus is consumed by his own resurrected followers. In a mid-credits scene, Cyrus wakes up in the Further, restrained in a dental chair and tortured by a ghostly dentist, then locked behind a red door by a key-fingered demon.
