Spear of Destiny

The Spear of Longinus: the fake relic of the Dial of Destiny's 1944 opening and the subject of a 1995 Indiana Jones comic.

Hailed as the Lance of Longinus, the Spear of Destiny transcends its religious origins to function as an instrument of absolute dominion. In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, near the end of World War II, the Nazis capture Indiana Jones and Oxford archaeologist Basil Shaw as they try to retrieve the Spear of Longinus from a castle in the French Alps, and the astrophysicist Jürgen Voller reports that the Lance is fake. The 1995 Dark Horse comic series Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny, which continues from the ending of the Last Crusade, has Jones and his father search for the Holy Lance in Ireland in 1945.

Lore & Background

A follow-up adventure game to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, also titled Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny, was planned around the Spear of Longinus; Elaine Lee loosely reworked its story into the four-part comic released from April to July 1995. A novel involving the Spear of Destiny was dropped because Dark Horse Comics was developing the idea.

Reader's Guide

The Holy Lance, also called the Spear of Longinus or the Spear of Destiny, is the lance that pierced the side of Jesus on the cross; it is mentioned in the Gospel of John, which does not name the soldier.
