The Holy Lance, also known as the Spear of Destiny or the Spear of Longinus, is a legendary weapon said to have pierced the side of Jesus Christ during the Crucifixion. In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny it appears only in the opening, set near the end of World War II: the Nazis capture Indiana Jones and Oxford archaeologist Basil Shaw as they try to retrieve the Spear of Longinus from a castle in the French Alps, and the astrophysicist Jürgen Voller reports that the Lance is fake.

Lore & Background
The real time device of the film is Archimedes' Dial, the Antikythera mechanism, which Voller plans to use to travel back to 1939. Earlier, the 1995 Dark Horse comic series Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny had Jones and his father search for the Holy Lance in Ireland in 1945, and a planned follow-up game to the Fate of Atlantis, also called Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny, was to revolve around the Spear of Longinus.
