Plot

Shantanu 'Shaan' Sengupta, a former Lieutenant in the Indian Navy, works as a night manager at a premier star hotel in Dhaka during the Rohingya genocide of 2017. Safina Kidwai, a 14-year-old girl married to the hotel's majority owner Freddie Rehman, asks Shaan to help her escape to India. When he refuses, she steals his phone and secretly records a meeting between Shailendra 'Shelly' Rungta and Freddie about smuggling illegal arms into Bangladesh, also photographing the paperwork. Shaan shares the evidence with his friend Vikram Bhagwat of the Indian High Commission, who passes it to RAW officer Lipika Saikia Rao in New Delhi. Lipika, who has been monitoring Shelly, believes the evidence is sufficient to pursue him and asks Shaan to keep Safina safe overnight. Freddie and Shelly learn of the leak, and Freddie orders Safina killed. Shaan hides her in an unfinished wing of the hotel, but while fetching food he learns from Lipika that her phone is bugged. He returns to find Safina has fallen to her death, ruled a suicide. Devastated, Shaan leaves his job.

Reception

The Night Manager received mostly positive reviews, with praise for its screenplay, production values, performances—particularly those of Kapoor, Kapur, and Shome—and direction. Anuj Kumar of The Hindu noted that Aditya Roy Kapur finally received a role where his performance matched his personality, and that the writing demanded emotional gravitas from him. Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV observed that because the Indian version took four episodes to cover what the British production did in three, it ended at a point where much remained unresolved. Rohan Naahar of The Indian Express gave 3 out of 5 stars, questioning whether audiences would return for the second part after a three-month gap. Deepa Gahlot of Rediff.com wrote that the series captured the superficial plot elements but missed the intricate circuitry of le Carré's novel. Roktim Rajpal of India Today rated it 2.5 out of 5, stating that the series lost momentum from the second episode onward, with the kidnapping sequence lacking intensity. Dishya Sharma of News18 noted a dip in pace in the third episode and an abrupt ending that left viewers hanging. Ajit Andhere of Deccan Chronicle remarked that releasing only the first four episodes hindered the story, especially since the plot was already known. Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in highlighted Tillotama Shome's performance as the most valuable, calling her character a perfectly judged scene-stealer that gave the remake needed bite.
