Hegemony Senate

The legislative body of the Hegemony of Man, governing a network of worlds.

The Senate of the Hegemony of Man appears in the Hyperion Cantos through its members. Meina Gladstone is the senate CEO of the Hegemony, Gabriel Féodor Kolchev is the senator of Lusus, and Brawne Lamia's father, Byron Lamia, was a senator and once a friend of Gladstone.

Lore & Background

These farcasters are created and managed by the TechnoCore, an AI civilization whose physical location is unknown. The Hegemony faces opposition from the Ousters, genetically modified humans who fled the Hegemony's influence before Earth was destroyed. During the crisis, CEO Meina Gladstone made key decisions, including positioning Joseph Severn as a staff member and later ordering the destruction of the farcaster network after learning the TechnoCore was responsible for attacks blamed on the Ousters.

The Hegemony and TechnoCore Dynamics

The novel presents a sophisticated interstellar political landscape dominated by the Hegemony of Man, a vast governmental entity connecting numerous planets via instantaneous farcaster portals. These critical transportation nodes are entirely created and managed by the TechnoCore, an enigmatic artificial intelligence civilization whose physical location remains unknown to humanity. While humans rely on this network for survival and expansion, the Core interacts with them primarily through virtual realities, maintaining a mysterious and often manipulative presence.

The Hegemony faces external pressure from the Ousters, modified humans who live in space stations between the stars. Although full-scale conflict between these factions has been rare, tensions escalate dramatically as the Ousters launch an invasion of Hyperion. This geopolitical struggle is further complicated by internal betrayals and the revelation that the TechnoCore may be orchestrating events from behind the scenes, challenging the very foundations of human governance and autonomy.

The Collapse of the WorldWeb

The novel culminates in a catastrophic unraveling of human civilization triggered by the revelation that the TechnoCore, not the Ousters, was responsible for attacking the WorldWeb. This deception is exposed through an autopsy revealing a Core cybrid masquerading as an Ouster, prompting Hegemony CEO Meina Gladstone to order the immediate destruction of the farcaster network. General Morpurgo and his son time their transit so that they are inside the farcaster system as it is destroyed, destroying themselves along with a lethal weapon meant for Hyperion and saving the planet.

The aftermath brings mass chaos and riots across the Hegemony, and Gladstone lets the rioters kill her as partial penance for the suffering she caused. Simultaneously, the fatline communication system is abruptly shut down by a Universal Intelligence residing in the Void Which Binds, leaving humanity isolated and forced to navigate a new era without their technological crutches.
