Chimera Ant Colony
An invasive, man-eating species from the Dark Continent that learns to use Nen.
The Chimera Ants are an invasive insect species that originates on the Dark Continent. They are ranked as a quarantined species because of their voracious appetites, and the colony at the centre of the story grows from a single mutated, man-eating queen found in the Neo-Green Life (N.G.L.) region.
Lore & Background
Chimera Ant queens reproduce by phagogenesis: they breed asexually and pass on the genetic traits of whatever they have eaten, sometimes feeding on a species until it is driven extinct. The queen of the series mutated to about two metres tall, far above the usual ten centimetres, and targeted humans, producing humanoid ants who want individuality and can use Nen. Rammot became the first ant to use Nen after an attack by Gon and Killua activated his aura.
The queen feeds on small animals and then people to produce soldiers and, finally, a king. Meruem forces his own premature birth, fatally injuring her, and the Royal Guards leave the N.G.L. with him to take over the Republic of East Gorteau. On her death the queen is found to have borne a twin to Meruem, later revealed to be Kite reborn as a Chimera Ant. The Hunter Association sends an extermination team to the East Gorteau palace, and Netero kills the King with a bomb.
