Iron Bank of Braavos

The Iron Bank never forgets a debt, and its price is always paid in blood or gold.

The Iron Bank of Braavos is one of the wealthiest banks in the known world, based in the city of Braavos across the Narrow Sea. Braavos has many moneylenders, and the Iron Bank lends money to foreign nations, especially the Crown of the Seven Kingdoms, which has borrowed millions.

Lore & Background

The Iron Bank appears in A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones, set nearly two hundred years after the events of House of the Dragon. Under King Robert Baratheon the realm is deeply in debt to House Lannister, the Faith and the Iron Bank. When Cersei Lannister defaults on the debt, the Bank's financial retaliation nearly cripples the economy of Westeros, and its representative Tycho Nestoris comes to King's Landing to request repayment.

Reader's Guide

Stannis Baratheon turns to the Bank to pay for an army: in the television series Davos Seaworth writes to it in Stannis' name and persuades it to back him, and in the novels Massey is to travel to Braavos and use an Iron Bank loan to hire twenty thousand sellswords. Braavos itself was founded by refugees fleeing Valyrian expansion, escaped slaves and other rabble.
