Zhang Ziyi
Chinese actress known for strong-willed roles and international acclaim.
She has won numerous Best Actress awards, including 12 for a single film, making her the most awarded Chinese actress for one movie.[1] She is counted among China's Four Dan actresses, and in 2005 Time magazine described her as "China's gift to Hollywood".[2][3]

Life and work
That role won her the Most Promising Actress award from the Chicago Film Critics Association and Best Supporting Actress from the Independent Spirit Awards.[4] Zhang came into the world in Beijing; her father worked as an accountant and her mother taught kindergarten.[5] Zhang Yimou cast her in her first significant part, The Road Home (1998), a film that took the Silver Bear at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival.[6] International recognition came in 2000 when she portrayed Yu Jiaolong in Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.[7]
Her first Hollywood appearance was as a villain in the 2001 film Rush Hour 2.[1]

A 2001 Hollywood.com interview reported that Zhang found playing her first villain role "very exciting" because she could "analyze the psyche of the character"[8] The same source noted that in less than one year she had starred in an Oscar-winning film and appeared in People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People Issue.[8] A 2010 China.org.cn article reported that Zhang sued a newspaper for reputation infringement and that her fiancé Vivi Nevo issued a statement supporting her.[9] The Guardian's 2004 review described Zhang as "fast becoming the It Girl of Asia" for her role in House of Flying Daggers.[10]
