Jonathan Pryce

Welsh actor and knighted stage and screen star.

John Price, who was born on 1 June 1947 in Carmel, Flintshire, adopted the stage name Jonathan Pryce.[1] The satirical dystopian black comedy Brazil (1985), directed by Terry Gilliam, featured Pryce in his breakthrough screen role.[2] For his performance as Pope Francis in the 2019 film The Two Popes, Pryce received his initial Academy Award nomination.[3]

Life and work

Pryce was raised a Welsh Presbyterian and educated at Holywell Grammar School before training to be a teacher at Edge Hill College.[1] He joined the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool upon graduation and eventually became its artistic director.[4] Pryce portrayed Governor Weatherby Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean series from 2003 to 2007.[5][6] In 1977, Pryce won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his Broadway performance in Comedians.[7]

An Olivier Award was given to Pryce in 1980 for his portrayal of the title character in Hamlet at the Royal Court Theatre.[8] The Engineer, a role in the West End musical Miss Saigon, was first played by Pryce in 1990.[9] For his contributions to drama and charity, Pryce received a knighthood in the 2021 Birthday Honours.[10]

A 2004 review of The Goat or Who is Sylvia? describes Pryce's performance as "monumental" and notes his versatility ranges "from middle-aged distraction through high-adrenalin verbal sparring to ultimate wailing despair".[11] The same review lists the play as written by Edward Albee, directed by Anthony Page, and co-starring Kate Fahy, Matthew Marsh, and Eddie Redmayne.[11] Pryce turned down a role in Gilliam's first attempt at that film in 2000 because he thought the script was weak.[12] The Guardian piece describes Pryce as "the quiet man of British acting; the coiled spring in the works, unobtrusive, precise and usually critical".[12]
