Life and work

Theron's mother killed her father in self-defense on 21 June 1991 after he attacked them with a gun.[6][5] She moved to the United States and trained as a ballet dancer at the Joffrey Ballet School until a knee injury ended that career.[7] Talent agent John Crosby cashed a check for her at a bank and gave her his business card, leading to her introduction to acting school.[8] She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster (2003).[9]

She adopted two young daughters and has said one of them is a transgender girl.[10][11] In 1994, she traveled to Los Angeles using a one-way ticket; her mother provided her with a $300 budget for her initial expenses.[12] Her debut with spoken lines occurred in the 1996 film 2 Days in the Valley, where she played hitwoman Helga Svelgen.[13]

What the cited sources add

The Hello Magazine biography confirms Theron was born in Benoni, originally spoke Afrikaans, and grew up on her parents' farm.[5] It states that neither Theron nor her mother were hit by the bullets during the attack by her father.[5] The same source notes that Theron initially began her career as a model.[5] The sa-venues.com record states that the Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron was born in Benoni.[14]
