Madhuri Dixit
The dancing diva who redefined stardom in Hindi cinema.
Madhuri Dixit Nene (born 15 May 1967) is an Indian actress and television personality who has starred in more than 70 Hindi films. She became a national icon, shaping Indian popular culture, and critics praised her acting and dancing. In an industry dominated by men, she was noted for carrying films as a solo lead, matching the success of her male peers. She has won six Filmfare Awards from a record 17 nominations, and in 2008 the Indian government gave her the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honor.
Dixit was born and raised in Mumbai. She started her film career in 1984 with a lead role in the drama Abodh. After a string of box-office flops, she broke through with the action drama Tezaab (1988). She then cemented her stardom with leading roles in major romantic hits such as Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), winning four Filmfare Best Actress awards for these performances. Other commercially successful films from that era include Ram Lakhan, Tridev (both 1989), Thanedaar, Kishen Kanhaiya (both 1990), Saajan (1991), Khalnayak (1993), and Raja (1995).
Beyond mainstream hits, Dixit earned critical acclaim for Prem Pratigyaa, Parinda (both 1989), Anjaam (1994), Mrityudand (1997), Pukar (2000), and Lajja (2001). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Chandramukhi in Devdas (2002). After a break, she made a brief comeback with the musical Aaja Nachle (2007) and worked sporadically in films over the following decades. During this time, she was mainly a talent judge on dance reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (2010–2022) and Dance Deewane (since 2018). She continued to receive praise for the black comedy Dedh Ishqiya (2014) and the Netflix drama series The Fame Game (2022), and her highest-grossing releases were the comedies Total Dhamaal (2019) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024).
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Dixit was among India’s highest-paid celebrities, and she has appeared on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list since it began in 2012. Besides acting, she does philanthropic work, including advocating for children’s rights and against child labour with UNICEF since 2014. She also takes part in concert tours and stage shows, and co-founded the production company RnM Moving Pictures. She has been married to Shriram Nene since 1999, and they have two sons.
Dixit was born on 15 May 1967 in Bombay to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, into a Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin family. She has two older sisters and an older brother. She developed an interest in dance at age three and trained in Kathak for eight years, becoming a professionally trained Kathak dancer. She attended Divine Child High School in Andheri and took part in dramatics. Originally wanting to be a microbiologist, she enrolled at Sathaye College in Vile Parle, Mumbai, studying microbiology as part of a BSc. Six months into the course, she left to pursue a full-time film career.
Dixit debuted in 1984 with Rajshri Productions’ drama Abodh, opposite Bengali actor Tapas Paul. The film failed commercially, but her performance got positive reviews. Her only 1985 release, Awara Baap, flopped. Around this time, a black-and-white photo of her by Gautam Rajadhyaksha appeared on the cover of the magazine Debonair, and she was on the cover of Filmfare in April 1986.
Her next four films—Swati (1986), Manav Hatya (1986), Hifazat (1987), and Uttar Dakshin (1987)—were both critical and commercial failures. Hifazat was her first of many collaborations with Anil Kapoor. In 1988, two of her releases, Mohre and Khatron Ke Khiladi, failed commercially. That year, she also acted in the commercially successful Dayavan.
Her next film was N. Chandra’s action drama Tezaab, opposite Anil Kapoor. Her performance as Mohini, a poor, miserable woman forced to dance to support her father, brought her mainstream recognition. Tezaab became the year’s highest-grossing film and earned her her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination. The film’s success made her a leading actress in Hindi cinema and was a turning point in her career.
In 1989, her first release, Vardi, did fairly well. She then reunited with Anil Kapoor for Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan, playing Radha Shastri, a girl in love with a childhood friend. Ram Lakhan was the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. Next came the romantic drama Prem Pratigyaa, opposite Mithun Chakraborty.
Her portrayal of Laxmi Rao, a distraught woman who reforms a local gangster, earned her a second Filmfare Best Actress nomination. She was then cast opposite Sunny Deol in the multi-starrer thriller Tridev.
