Life and work
Bloch was educated at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and the École normale supérieure, graduating in 1908 with degrees in geography and history.[2][3] Bloch was appointed to a chair in economic history at the Sorbonne in 1936.[4] He was arrested by the Gestapo on 8 March 1944, tortured, and executed on 16 June 1944.[5][6][7] At age 53, during the Second World War, Bloch was mobilised and participated in the Battle of Dunkirk.[8][9]
What the cited sources add
Bloch's biographer Katherine Stirling ascribed significance to the era of the French Third Republic in which Bloch was born.[10] The Polish social historian Bronisław Geremek suggests that Bloch's 1941 will hints that he foresaw his death.[11] According to historian Daniel Hochedez, Bloch understood his wartime function as both a "witness and narrator".[12] Rees Davies, a historian, observes that Bloch performed his military service with "considerable distinction".[12]
