Life and work
As a child he was fascinated with the natural world, Romanian folklore, and the Christian faith, and he joined the Romanian Boy Scouts.[4] He attended the Spiru Haret National College alongside future philosopher Constantin Noica.[5] Eliade traveled to India in autumn 1928 to study Sanskrit and philosophy under Surendranath Dasgupta at Calcutta University.[6] In 1936 he was targeted by far-right press for allegedly authoring "pornography" in his works, and was stripped of his university position in summer 1937.[7]
In 1942 he authored a volume praising the Estado Novo of António de Oliveira Salazar.[8] Following his wife Nina's death in Lisbon in late 1944, Eliade moved to France in September 1945 and later to the United States in 1956.[9][10][11] He became the Sewell Avery Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago in 1964.[11] Mircea Eliade's father, Gheorghe Eliade, served as an officer in the Romanian Land Forces, and his mother was Jeana, whose maiden name was Vasilescu; Eliade was born in Bucharest.[12]
From 1925 through 1928, Eliade was a student at the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, where he completed his studies with a dissertation on Tommaso Campanella.[13] A doctorate was awarded to Eliade in 1933 for his dissertation examining Yoga practices; a French translation of this work appeared three years afterward.[14] Following his 1938 detention and subsequent freeing, Eliade took up posts first as Cultural Attaché to the United Kingdom and then to Portugal.[15][16][17]
What the cited sources add
Sergio Vila-Sanjuán's account notes that Eliade lived in Bucharest intermittently until 1940, leaving the country permanently except for brief visits, the last in 1942.[18] Vila-Sanjuán identifies Sorin Alexandrescu as Eliade's nephew, the son of his sister Corina.[18]
