First King of Poland, unifier and expander of the realm.
Bolesław I the Brave was a Piast monarch who transformed Poland into a hereditary monarchy through military campaigns and state-building.[1] A law from the year 1000 banned beaver hunting and established the "Bobrowniczy" position to ensure compliance.[2][3]

Life and work
After Mieszko I died on 25 May 992, Bolesław unified the country and expelled his stepmother and half-brothers from Poland.[4] He ransomed the remains of Bishop Adalbert of Prague after the bishop was murdered by Prussians on 23 April 997.[5] Bolesław took advantage of Emperor Otto III's pilgrimage to Saint Adalbert's tomb in Gniezno in early 1000.[6] After Henry II's death in 1024, Bolesław crowned himself king in 1025, and Poland was raised to the rank of a kingdom.[7][8]
Mieszko I and the Bohemian princess Dobrawa had only one known child, Bolesław, whose birth occurred in either 966 or 967.[9] An epitaph from the 11th century characterizes Bolesław's mother as "true-believing" and his father as "faithless," which implies his birth preceded his father's baptism.[10] Territories in modern-day Slovakia, Moravia, Red Ruthenia, Meissen, Lusatia, and Bohemia were conquered by Bolesław through successful military campaigns to the west, south, and east.[1] Around 995, Bolesław's earliest coins were minted; one of these carried the inscription Vencievlavus.[11]
What the cited sources add
Thietmar, a chronicler, depicted Bolesław as a merciless ruler who punished transgressions against the new faith with the fervor of a convert.[12]
