Humphrey DeForest Bogart was an American actor born on Christmas Day 1899 in Manhattan, New York City.^[1][2] In 1960, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was awarded to him, and he also received an Academy Award.^[3]

Life and work

Bogart was the eldest child of surgeon Belmont DeForest Bogart and commercial illustrator Maud Humphrey.^[2][4] He attended the Delancey School, Trinity School, and Phillips Academy, but left Phillips in 1918 after failing four out of six classes.^[5] He signed a contract with the Fox Film Corporation for $750 a week.^[6] During World War I, in the spring of 1918, Bogart joined the United States Navy because he had no other career possibilities.^[7][8]

The 1928 two-reeler film The Dancing Town, which survives intact, featured Bogart's first film appearance alongside Helen Hayes.^[9] Esophageal cancer caused Bogart's death in January 1957; he was known for being a heavy smoker and drinker.^[10][8]
