Life and work
Almost everything known of Bede's life comes from the last chapter of his Ecclesiastical History.[3] He probably transferred to Jarrow when Ceolfrith founded it in 682.[4] Bede wrote his first works around 701 and eventually completed over 60 books.[1] He died at Jarrow on 26 May 735, dictating to a scribe until the end.[1]
His birthplace was on the property of the twin monasteries at Monkwearmouth and Jarrow.[3] When he was seven, his relatives placed him as an oblate at Monkwearmouth for schooling under Benedict Biscop and later Ceolfrith.[5] A letter describing Bede's final days and death was composed by his student Cuthbert.[1]
