Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl born around 1412 in Domrémy who led military campaigns during the Hundred Years' War.[1][2]

Life and work

Her father Jacques d'Arc was a peasant farmer and village official, and her mother Isabelle Romée provided her religious education.[1][3][4] She reported her first vision around age thirteen in 1425, seeing Saint Michael surrounded by angels.[5] In May 1428 she petitioned the garrison commander at Vaucouleurs for an armed escort to the Armagnac court.[6] A council of theologians at Poitiers declared her a good Catholic, and the Dauphin commissioned plate armor for her.[1][6]

She arrived at Orléans on 29 April 1429 as part of a relief army and was greeted enthusiastically.[7] Because she never learned to read or write as a child, any letters she sent were dictated.[3]

A prophecy circulating in her youth promised an armed virgin would save France, and Joan implied she was that maiden.[6] Before the sixteenth century, no single standard spelling of her name existed; variants included "Tarc", "Dart", and "Day".[8] At her trial, her father's name was recorded as "Tart", and a 1429 letter from Charles VII referred to her as "Jeanne d'Ay de Domrémy".[8] In her own letters, she called herself "Jeanne la Pucelle" and signed her name as "Jehanne".[6]
