Life and work

Danton was born on 26 October 1759 in Arcis-sur-Aube to a lawyer father and Madeleine Camus.[2][4] As a child, he survived a bull attack and smallpox that scarred his face.[5] On 14 June 1787 he married Antoinette Gabrielle Charpentier, with whom he had three sons.[6] Danton began his revolutionary activity in spring 1789 by giving speeches at the Palais Royal, earning the nickname "The Thunderer"[7]

After the fall of the monarchy, Danton was appointed Minister of Justice on 10 August 1792.[1][8] On 2 September 1792 he delivered a famous speech calling for daring action against enemies, which many believe incited the September Massacres.[9] Danton supported the foundation of a Revolutionary Tribunal on 10 March 1793 and became the first president of the Committee of Public Safety.[1][10] His wife died in childbirth on 10 February 1793, and he later married Louise Sébastienne Gély on 1 July 1793.[11][12]

He was arrested at the end of March 1794 and executed within a week.[3] After moving to Paris in 1780, Danton worked as a clerk for Maître Vinot, and three years later, in 1783, he successfully completed the barrister examination in Reims.[13]
