Life and work

The details of Euclid's life are mostly unknown, with the traditional narrative following the 5th century AD account by Proclus.[3] According to Proclus, Euclid lived shortly after Plato's followers and before Archimedes, specifically during the rule of Ptolemy I.[4] The Elements is divided into plane geometry, basic number theory, and solid geometry.[5] It has been speculated that Euclid was among the first scholars of the Musaeum in Alexandria.[6]

Euclid's magnum opus is his thirteen-book treatise the Elements, which assembles accepted mathematical knowledge into a cogent order and adds new proofs to fill in gaps.[7]
