History
The square took its name from the Leal Senado, a meeting place for Chinese and Portuguese during the 16th to 18th centuries, located where the Leal Senado Building now stands. In 1940 a small garden was built at the square's centre, featuring a bronze statue of Vicente Nicolau de Mesquita atop a stone pillar drawing a sword. The statue was removed during the 12-3 incident because Mesquita had caused the deaths of many Qing Chinese soldiers; a fountain was later erected on the site and remains today.
Most surrounding buildings are European in style and many are protected monuments. The area once accommodated traffic and parking, but in the early 1990s the entire square was covered with Portuguese pavement and made pedestrian-only. The square has hosted large events including festival celebrations, flea markets, and performances, and Macau's governors once inspected troops there. The 2005 100 patacas note issued by the Banco Nacional Ultramarino depicts the square on its obverse side.
