Lore & Background
Larisa Semyonovna Diriy was born in Kherson, Ukrainian SSR. Her father left when she was 11 months old and was killed at the Battle of Stalingrad; she was raised by her illiterate mother, who worked as a cleaner and night watchman. She survived the Nazi occupation of Ukraine. She first practiced ballet but turned to gymnastics after her choreographer moved away. Her first coach was Mykhailo Sotnychenko. In 1950 she received her first sports degree and joined the Ukrainian students team at the All-Union gymnastics competitions in Kazan. She graduated high school with a gold medal in 1953, moved to Kyiv, attended the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and trained under Oleksandr Mishakov. Her first notable success came at the 4th World Festival of Youth and Students in Bucharest, where she won gold medals. She debuted internationally at the 1954 Rome World Championships, winning gold in the team competition. She later switched to the Institute of Physical Culture.

Latynina's Olympic career began at the 1956 Melbourne Games, where she won gold in the all-around, vault, and team event, plus silver on uneven bars and floor exercise. She won all gold medals at the 1957 European championships and was awarded the Order of Lenin. At the 1958 World Championships she won five of six titles while four months pregnant. At the 1960 Rome Olympics she led the Soviet team to the first four places in the all-around, defended her floor title, and took silver on balance beam and uneven bars, plus bronze on vault. At the 1962 World Championships she beat Věra Čáslavská for the all-around title. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Čáslavská beat her in the all-around, but Latynina won team gold and floor gold for the third consecutive time, bringing her total to 18 Olympic medals (9 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze). She won a medal in every event she entered except the 1956 balance beam (4th). Her 18 Olympic medals stood as a record until 2012. She is one of only two women (with Katie Ledecky) to win nine Olympic gold medals, and the only female athlete to have held the record for most Olympic gold medals. After retiring from competition following the 1966 World Championships, she coached the Soviet national team until 1977, leading the women's team to gold in 1968, 1972, and 1976. She organized the gymnastics competition at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 2023 she spoke out against Russian athletes competing under a neutral flag due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, calling it 'unpatriotic'.
