Elena Zamolodchikova

Elena Mikhailovna Zamolodchikova is a retired Russian artistic gymnast who won four Olympic medals. She became Olympic champion on vault and floor exercise in 2000 and is a two-time World champion on vault, taking the title in 1999 and 2002. She also earned a bronze medal with the Russian team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Beyond the Olympics, she won the World Cup Final vault title twice (1998 and 2000) and was European team champion in 2000. In 2015, she was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

Zamolodchikova was born on 19 September 1982 in Moscow. Her father, Mikhail Alexandrovich, served in the Soviet Army and was among the first Chernobyl liquidators; her mother, Irina Nikolaevna, was a teacher. She started gymnastics at age six after watching a competition on television. She briefly quit the sport when diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, but a second doctor refuted that diagnosis, and she returned to training.

She joined the Russian junior national team in 1996 and competed at the 1998 Junior European Championships, where the team won gold and she took silver on vault.

In 1998, she became age-eligible for senior competition. At the European Championships that year, she helped the team win silver and placed fourth on vault. She also won the all-around title at the 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow. At her first World Championships in 1999, she won gold on vault, silver with the team, and bronze in the all-around. Later that year, she won vault gold at both the Glasgow and Stuttgart Grand Prix events.

The 2000 season began with a vault gold at the Montreux World Cup. Despite her father’s recent death, she competed at the European Championships, leading the team to gold and earning individual silvers in the all-around and vault finals, plus a bronze on balance beam. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she was part of the Russian team alongside Svetlana Khorkina, Yekaterina Lobaznyuk, Elena Produnova, Anastasiya Kolesnikova, and Anna Chepeleva. The team led after qualification but fell to silver after several mistakes, including Zamolodchikova’s fall from the beam. In the all-around final, she led after two events but fell on floor exercise and finished sixth. She initially did not qualify for the vault final due to the two-per-country rule, but Khorkina gave up her spot, saying Zamolodchikova had a better chance.
