Gameplay

The game follows the Universal Century Gundam timeline and takes place during the One Year War. The player pilots mobile suits and characters from the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series. Three modes are available: Arcade, Versus, and Campaign. In Arcade mode, the player selects two mobile suits based on the chosen side—Earth Federation or Principality of Zeon—with the first used for ground combat and the second for space. Versus mode allows two players to compete on the same or opposing sides using various maps and mobile suits. Campaign mode centers on a player-named soldier fighting through the war; as the campaign progresses, new mobile suits are unlocked, including through test missions. Exceptions to unlockable suits are captured enemy mobile suits, the Project V units (Gundam, RX-75 Guntank, Guncannon), and all of Char Aznable's custom mobile suits. Defeating Campaign mode once unlocks Extra Mode, which grants top-notch allied suits and all opposing-side suits, but the AI becomes harder and destroyed suits are not replaced. Beating Campaign mode also makes all mobile suits available in Versus and Arcade modes.

Reception

The PlayStation 2 version received average reviews according to Metacritic. In Japan, Famitsu gave both the PS2 and Dreamcast versions a score of 32 out of 40. Game Machine listed the arcade version as the most popular arcade game of the month in its May 1, 2001 issue, and the DX version similarly in its November 1, 2001 issue. The game was the fourth highest-grossing arcade software of 2001 in Japan, and ranked tenth overall for Japanese highest-grossing arcade games that year.
