Differences from prior games
The game follows the action-oriented hack-and-slash style of previous Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors titles, with some tactical elements, but draws its content from various Mobile Suit Gundam anime series rather than the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Unique gameplay mechanics include more ranged combat options than in other Dynasty Warriors games, though melee remains central, and units are more mobile, using thrusters to dash, jump mid-air, or fly. New additions include Quick Time Events, colossal mobile armors as bosses, improved enemy AI, and the ability to perform aerial maneuvers and attacks simultaneously. Intermission and briefing scenes now use complete 2-D illustrations with various outfits for characters. Official Mode expands to include the story from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, while mobile suits that were non-playable in the previous game, such as the Guncannon and Hambrabi, become playable. An enhanced Versus Mode is included for North American and PAL regions only, and the option for Japanese audio on the North American version was removed.
Game Modes
The game features two modes: Official Mode and Mission Mode. Official Mode returns with four playable pilots covering events from the Universal Century timeline, including Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, and Char's Counterattack, though an original story remains the main focus. Mission Mode introduces an all-new original story with specific tasks such as Collection Missions for acquiring mobile suit parts and Friendship Missions for building friendships or rivalries. License Missions must be completed to allow characters to use mobile suits outside their timeline or continuity. Gallery mode, renamed gallery and library mode in the Japanese version, includes character biographies, mobile suit and battleship information, movie clips, and musical tracks from various Gundam series themes.
