The band evolved from a project formed around 2010 by Kodzo 'Rock' Ahavi, who recruited musicians to perform covers of AC/DC, Metallica, and Scorpions. After an earlier incarnation named Arka'n disbanded around 2015–2016, the remaining members merged with the rap metal group H Weapons, formed by Kodzo's brother Elom 'Enrico' Ahavi, and added traditional percussionist Yao Justin 'Mass' Aholou. The current quintet was established with Rock on lead vocals and guitars, Enrico on rap vocals and keyboards, Aholou on clean vocals and percussion, Francis on bass, and Richard on drums.

The name 'Arka'n' refers to 'the dark/hidden side of the Universe,' while 'Asrafokor' translates as 'fist of the warrior,' adapted from 'Asrafocore,' a term coined by Ahavi meaning 'music of warriors.' The five fingers of a hand symbolize the five members. Due to Togo's lack of a heavy metal scene, the band handles production and live gear setup themselves.

Their debut album Zã Keli ('Darkness and Light') was self-recorded and released in 2019, leading to tours in other African countries and invitations to Europe, where they performed in France, Germany, and Switzerland. In 2023 they signed with Atomic Fire and released the single 'Walk With Us.' From Bedroom Sessions to a Quintet

Kodzo "Rock" Ahavi had been running a recording studio in Lomé for other artists when, around 2009 or 2010, he decided to assemble a group of musicians to perform both original compositions and covers of AC/DC, Metallica, Scorpions, Deep Purple, Rage Against the Machine, and even Bob Marley. The audience's growing demand for fresh material pushed the project forward. By 2012 or 2013, a band called Arka'n took shape, and Kodzo's younger brother Elom "Enrico" Ahavi simultaneously launched a rap-metal outfit named H Weapons. Early recordings were made in the members' bedrooms, with mattresses and bed covers serving as improvised soundproofing. In 2015 or 2016, the original Arka'n dissolved, and its surviving members merged with H Weapons while bringing in traditional percussionist Yao Justin "Mass" Aholou. The resulting five-piece—Rock on lead vocals and guitar, Enrico on rap vocals, keyboards, and percussion, Aholou on clean vocals and percussion, Koffi Ametefe "Francis" Amevo on bass, and Komla Siko "Richard" Tamakloe-Azamesu on drums—became Arka'n Asrafokor. Because Togo has virtually no infrastructure for heavy metal, the band handles nearly every technical aspect of their craft on their own.

Arka'n Asrafokor's sonic palette weaves together nu metal, thrash, groove, and death metal with funk, rap, reggae, psychedelic rock, and Togolese folk traditions. Critics and listeners have drawn parallels to acts as diverse as Soulfly, The Hu, Sepultura, Alien Weaponry, Pantera, Ill Niño, Laberinto, Dub War, and Slipknot. Beyond standard electric instruments, the quintet incorporates the gankogui, axatse, Evù drums, djembe, and talking drum into their arrangements. A striking structural choice on their debut Zã Keli was composing most tracks in 68 time signature, a meter deeply embedded in traditional Togolese music. From Lomé to European Festivals

The self-recorded debut album Zã Keli, released in 2019 and translating roughly to "Darkness and Light" or "Night and Day," gave the group their first significant international exposure. A 2019 performance at the ACCES showcase in Accra, Ghana, led directly to invitations to play in France, Germany, and Switzerland that same year. They were also profiled in Edward Banchs's book Scream for me, Africa!, a survey of the African heavy metal scene. The following years saw them headline at major European festivals: Eurockéennes and Paléo Festival in 2022, and Motocultor in 2023. In 2023 they signed with Atomic Fire and released the single "Walk With Us." By March 2024, they had announced their second album, Dzikkuh—roughly meaning "Let the Anger Revive"—along with the single "Angry God of Earth," which Metal Hammer named among that week's best new metal tracks. A follow-up single, "The Truth," arrived in April. The album, ultimately issued on 19 July 2024 through Reigning Phoenix Music, earned another Metal Hammer nod for the track "Final Tournament."

Warrior Music and the Meaning of the Name

The band's name carries layered significance. "Arkan" derives from "arcane," evoking the hidden, dark dimension of the universe—perceptions that exist beyond ordinary senses. "Asrafokor," meaning "fist of the warrior," is an adaptation of the term "Asrafocore," which Ahavi coined to describe the music of warriors. In Ewe, "asrafo" means warrior, while "kor" can signify a headquarters, a fist, or the five fingers of a hand—a deliberate nod to the group's five members. Philosophically, Kodzo rejects the idea that metal is a foreign import to Africa. He traces the genre's lineage through rock, blues, and ultimately African American musical roots, arguing that metal is inherently African.
