Traveler (Genshin Impact)

Interstellar traveler seeking their lost sibling across Teyvat.

Traveler (Genshin Impact)

The Traveler (Chinese: 旅行者; pinyin: Lǚxíngzhě), also known by their canonical names Aether (空; Kōng; 'air') or Lumine (荧; Yíng; 'light'), is the main protagonist of the video game Genshin Impact, developed by miHoYo. As an interstellar traveler from outside the world of Teyvat, they possess the unique ability to manipulate elemental power without a Vision, an external magical device normally required for most characters to control the elements. Their journey across Teyvat in search of their lost sibling, while becoming involved in local political conflicts and the conspiracies of the antagonistic Abyss Order, forms the central narrative of the game.

Number of playable versions (as of 2026)

Lore & Background

Throughout their journey, the Traveler becomes involved in the political crises of Teyvat's nations. In Mondstadt, they help end a crisis involving a dragon named Dvalin and learn that the Abyss Order is led by their sibling. In Liyue, they become entangled in a political crisis surrounding the apparent death of the region's ruler, and later reunite with their sibling, who refuses to leave and urges the Traveler to discover 'the truth of this world.' In Inazuma, they oppose the oppressive Vision Hunt Decree. In Sumeru, they discover they are a 'Descender'—someone originating from outside Teyvat—and learn of their sibling's plan called the 'Loom of Fate.' In Fontaine, they help resolve a crisis and encounter their sibling again, though only the sibling loses their memory of the meeting. In Natlan, they help repel an Abyss invasion and meet their sibling once more, who activates a Ley Line-weaving device and disappears.

Reader's Guide

The Traveler's significance lies in their dual role as both a player avatar and a distinct narrative character. Their dialogue is very limited, and their personality is conveyed mostly through actions, prompting discussion among critics about their marginalization and role as a silent protagonist. At the same time, the emotional storyline between the Traveler and their sibling has been regarded as one of the game's more deeply-developed narrative driving forces. The Traveler's ability to use multiple elements—unlike most characters who require a Vision—makes them a versatile combatant, with seven playable versions as of 2026, each serving offensive, defensive, or support roles. The choice between Aether and Lumine at the start of the game is entirely player preference, with no official or canonical version, though Aether appears more frequently in promotional materials. The Traveler's visual design has been a focus of fan discussion, with calls for new outfits in each nation to increase popularity, especially given long-running criticism of their combat strength. An animated short film titled 'The Road Not Taken,' released on May 24, 2024, centered on their journey, featuring a theme song by Japanese singer Aimer.
