Bennett (Genshin Impact)

An adventurer from Mondstadt with notoriously bad luck.

Bennett (Genshin Impact)

Bennett (Chinese: 班尼特; pinyin: Bānnítè) is a playable character in the video game *Genshin Impact*, developed by miHoYo, and was one of the first characters made available to players. In the game's lore, he is an adventurer from Mondstadt who is famous for his extremely bad luck. Critics responded positively to him, highlighting his kind nature and his usefulness in supporting the player during combat.

**Design and voice acting**

Bennett has messy light-blond hair, green eyes, and a bandage on his nose. His outfit, which combines beige, brown, and red, gives him the look of an adventurer. In English, he is voiced by Erika Harlacher; in Chinese, by Mu Xueting; in Japanese, by Ryōta Ōsaka; and in Korean, by Song Ha-rim. In an interview, Ōsaka described Bennett as somewhat mischievous and burdened by constant misfortune, which made Ōsaka feel sympathy for him. He noted that, like Bennett, he is an optimist who can quickly move past worries, but added that Bennett acts more from confidence than caution. Song recalled that during her audition, the sample material portrayed Bennett as arrogant and forceful, which was very different from the innocence and optimism he later showed. This initially made her worry about whether the sample matched the character. As the story developed, Song came to understand Bennett's more delicate side: he sometimes becomes cautious because he fears causing trouble for others, but he never loses hope and keeps moving forward. She also mentioned that after the version 5.8 story, in which Bennett reunites with the spirits of his biological parents, she felt that even while longing for their love, he was still thinking of the fathers who raised him and his friends, making him a considerate child. When recording a line where Bennett tells his mother he loves her, Song became so emotionally involved that she broke down crying, affecting her vocal control, and she called it an unforgettable moment in her career.

**Appearances**

Bennett's biological parents were members of an adventuring team called the Flintblades. During an accident, the team entered a dangerous domain and were attacked by monsters from the Abyss, with no survivors. Bennett, near death in a desperate place, was found by an elderly adventurer who hid him in his arms and carried him away, but the old man died from his injuries before he could explain what happened.

Lore & Background

Bennett's biological parents were members of the Flintblades adventuring team. During an accident, the Flintblades entered a dangerous domain and were attacked by monsters from the Abyss; there were no survivors. Bennett, near death in a hellish place, was discovered by an elderly adventurer who carried him away but died from injuries before recounting the event. Two older adventurers from the Adventurer's Guild in Mondstadt jointly adopted him, named him Bennett, and raised him as their own. He affectionately called them both 'dad' and carefully looked after them while continuing his adventures.

Bennett's life is filled with bad luck. He formed a party called 'Benny's Adventure Team', but his misfortune scared off all potential teammates, leaving him alone. During one adventure, he was gravely injured, but his resilient spirit kept him going. His story quest, 'Fantastic Voyage' (Act I), explores his journey and the friendships he builds despite his constant misfortune.

Reader's Guide

Bennett is a four-star Pyro damage dealer who uses a sword in combat, primarily functioning in a support role. His Elemental Burst summons a field that provides an attack boost and healing to allies. After unlocking his sixth Constellation, characters using swords, claymores, or polearms inside the field gain a Pyro damage bonus and their weapons are infused with Pyro. He was first made playable upon the game's release in September 2020. His mysterious origins were an important piece of foreshadowing. On July 18, 2025, developers revealed the form of Mare Jivari as a red storm with a pattern similar to Bennett's Constellation floating in the sky, hinting at his Natlan origins. Version 5.8 revealed his experiences as an infant and introduced a new outfit for him. Bennett's background caused discussion among players as early as September 2020. Iansan, a Natlan character from a trailer, was noted for physical similarities with Bennett, sparking speculation that was ultimately confirmed. Before version 5.8, Screen Rant writer Bruno Yonezawa speculated that Bennett may have been one of the heroes Mavuika intended to recruit, and that his bad luck stemmed from leaving Natlan and losing protection from the Wayob. Writer Holly Alice of Pocket Tactics supported the theory that Bennett was born in Natlan, noting his poem about Mare Jivari during Windblume and broken-ring design elements similar to his Constellation in Natlan. She theorized that bad luck might be a side effect of leaving Natlan before the Archon Quest's conclusion. In terms of character appeal, Siliconera writer Jenni Lada argued that Bennett feels like a protagonist because the world treats him harshly but he responds with cheerfulness, integrity, and eagerness to help others.

A Place Among 118

Bennett occupies one slot within a roster that, as of August 2026, stretches to 118 playable characters. Each of those characters is anchored to one of seven elemental affinities and carries a Vision, the magical device that lets its bearer channel elemental energy in combat. The multi-character structure of Genshin Impact draws its lineage from Japanese card games, and Bennett is part of that broader design philosophy rather than a standalone creation. Because the game's core revenue flows through time-limited character banners and the wishing mechanic, Bennett—like every other character in the lineup—represents a significant commercial pillar for HoYoverse. The production team has stated that characters are among the most important components of the game, and each one is expected to offer a distinct playstyle, a unique backstory, and a meaningful tie to the culture of the region it inhabits within Teyvat. In this sense, Bennett is not merely a combat option; he is a cultural and mechanical node in a system where the characters themselves are the primary source of profit, while other game content is provided to players at no cost.

From Brainstorm to 3D Model

No single artist or art director is credited with Bennett's creation. At miHoYo, character design is a team effort with no dedicated creative director position. The process begins with establishing the character's background story and the specific place of residence within Teyvat, followed by internal discussions and brainstorming sessions among the team. Only after that foundational work does the group evaluate the character's art style, background design, and gameplay mechanics, weighing those choices against player preferences. Once a concept design is locked in, the work moves into the modeling stage, where the team continuously reviews the 3D model to confirm it stays faithful to the original concept drawing. This iterative review ensures that what players ultimately see in-game matches the artistic vision approved at the concept phase. Bennett, like every other character in the roster, passed through this same pipeline: story first, then collective brainstorming, then concept art, then 3D modeling with ongoing consistency checks. The absence of a single author means the character reflects a consensus of many voices rather than one individual's aesthetic.

Light, Shading, and Decision Trees

On a technical level, Bennett's in-game presentation is handled through a rendering pipeline distinct from the environment around him. While Teyvat's scenes use deferred shading, characters are rendered with a forward-rendering approach, giving the production team precise control over every lighting effect so that the character's visual presentation always meets the artist's expectations. A dedicated system automatically adjusts the character's facial rendering based on the direction of the main light source, preserving the intended look of the face from any camera angle. For overall shading, the team applies a cel-shaded, cartoonish art style while simultaneously allowing the character to respond to real-time light sources, blending stylized aesthetics with dynamic illumination. Beneath the visuals, Bennett's in-game behavior is governed by a decision-tree AI system that determines which skills or movements the character executes, with the resulting data fed into the animation system. This AI framework, developed since 2017 and expanded to over 200 types early in the game's life, was later reorganized into an independent pipeline with modular inference categories to simplify updates and maintenance as new content shipped.

Story, Culture, and the Launch Pipeline

Contrary to the more common approach of using characters to serve a plot, Genshin Impact's production team designed a narrative centered on the characters themselves, running multi-plotline parallel stories under a single shared worldview. Bennett's background was shaped by building out interpersonal relationship networks and refining the regional cultural background of his origin. Many characters in the game draw from the legends and traditions of specific nations; for example, the adepti of Liyue are modeled on the Xian of Taoism, and the very concept of the Vision echoes the Taoist idea of a third eye manifesting in humans. Before Bennett's official in-game release, the team followed a structured promotional sequence: first a Live2D teaser on official social media to give players a first impression of the design, identity, and personality; then, the day before launch, a character trailer showcasing the detailed 3D model, combat animations, skill effects, and exclusive story or interaction clips; and finally a Collected Miscellany video that walks through the character's skills and unique mechanics while the narrator comments on personality within the character's worldview.
