Dehya originates from the Great Red Sand desert region of Sumeru, where many train as mercenaries. She is affiliated with the Eremites, a loose mercenary group. In the game's story, she serves as the bodyguard of Dunyarzad, a wealthy merchant's daughter and a devotee of the Dendro Archon. Dehya plays a significant role in the Sumeru Archon Quest, accompanying Dunyarzad and assisting the Traveler. She also goes by the nickname 'Flame-Mane'.

Dehya's significance lies in the stark contrast between her popularity and her perceived mechanical weakness. Upon her playable release, critics and fans found her damage output, attack speed, and cooldowns inferior to most characters, including lower-rarity ones. A social media campaign using the hashtag #FixDehya garnered over 44,000 posts on Twitter, but miHoYo did not buff her. Some fans accused the developer of deliberate racial bias, noting that most darker-skinned characters in the game were weak. Her legacy includes being ranked the worst character in a 2025 tier list by PCGamesN, with her abilities described as 'so awkward that they struggle to synergize with a party designed to buff her kit.' Despite this, her design—inspired by the Berber queen Al-Kahina—and her role in the story kept her a fan favorite. Her teaser trailer, where she uses her savings to found a charity called the Wall of Hope, led thousands of Chinese players to donate 680 Renminbi each to a real charity, Project Hope.

• Dehya's design was inspired by Al-Kahina (Dihya), a Berber warrior queen, and her father's name, Kusayla, mirrors Al-Kahina's father Kusaila.
• An update to Dehya fixed a visual bug with her eye color rather than improving her combat abilities, drawing further ridicule.
