Tartaglia (Genshin Impact)
Eleventh Fatui Harbinger, battle-loving warrior from Snezhnaya.
Tartaglia, whose real name is Ajax, appears in the video game *Genshin Impact* from developer miHoYo. He debuted in the Liyue storyline after the game’s 2020 launch and became playable that same year. He belongs to the Fatui, a diplomatic body from the fictional nation of Snezhnaya that serves as a primary antagonistic force in the game. As the Eleventh of the Fatui Harbingers, he goes by the codename "Childe." This warrior is courageous, loves combat, remains loyal and passionate, and holds his family in high regard.
Born in Snezhnaya, he has short, messy orange hair and pale blue eyes. His outfit is primarily dark blue and black with gold accents, and he wears an earring with a red gemstone along with a Fatui mask. In gameplay, he wields a Hydro bow and can freely shift between ranged and melee attack styles. His Riptide mechanic allows him to deal heavy area-of-effect damage. Since his release, players have widely appreciated Tartaglia for his layered personality, appeal, and high skill ceiling in battle; he is considered one of the game’s most popular antagonists.
Tartaglia’s design and voice work reflect his role. His English voice actor is Griffin Burns, his Chinese voice actor is Li Chunyin, his Japanese voice actor is Ryōhei Kimura, and his Korean voice actor is Nam Doh-hyeong. Kimura noted in an interview that Tartaglia’s lines made him seem difficult to handle at first. He initially appears airy and composed, but his true nature is a love for fighting, which Kimura found unsettling. However, Kimura was surprised to learn that Tartaglia deeply values his family, contradicting the battle-maniac stereotype. Kimura described Tartaglia as doting on his family, which made him hard to dislike entirely. Kimura, a self-described pacifist, said the only trait he shares with Tartaglia is valuing family. Regarding the Traveler, Kimura sees Tartaglia as both a friend and an ally, but not fully on the same side. He believes Tartaglia is most interesting when he remains distant yet sharp, and that becoming a complete good friend would feel lonely. Kimura also praised Tartaglia’s view that battle scars honor warriors, reflecting pride and honor, and noted Tartaglia’s performer side, as he thinks highly of his acting skills despite not being a professional.

Lore & Background
Tartaglia's real name is Ajax. He was born in Morepesok, a town in Snezhnaya, and was named after an adventure hero from his father's favorite stories. At age 14, he ran away from home and accidentally fell into the Abyss. There, he awakened the sleeping monster 'All-Devouring Narwhal' and met a swordswoman named Skirk. Ajax became Skirk's disciple and, over three months in the Abyss, learned the techniques for traversing the Abyss. It is here he acquired the Foul Legacy transformation skill he would later use. Due to the difference in the flow of time in the Abyss compared to the outside world, only three days had passed in the outside world. After returning home, Ajax's personality changed drastically: he became frivolous, self-confident, and fond of conflict. He joined the Fatui and earned the appreciation of one of their Harbingers, Pulcinella, who promoted him to the rank of Harbinger himself, where he received his codename. Around that time, the Tsaritsa, Snezhnaya's ruler, gave him his Delusion.
Reader's Guide
Tartaglia is a five-star Hydro bow character whose Elemental Skill allows him to switch between ranged bow attacks and melee attacks using Hydro blades. His Elemental Burst changes depending on the current combat mode: in ranged mode, it unleashes arrows over a large area, while in melee mode, it performs a sweeping slash with a Hydro polearm. He has a unique mechanic known as Riptide and can deal high amounts of area-of-effect damage. Since his release, Tartaglia has been widely liked by players for his complex personality, sex appeal, and high skill ceiling in combat, and is regarded as one of the most popular antagonists in the game. In the main story, he rescues the Traveler in Liyue, later battles them at the Golden House, and summons the god Osial to force the Geo Archon to reveal himself. In Fontaine, he is accused of disappearances, cleared, but still sent to the Fortress of Meropide, where he fights the All-Devouring Narwhal in the Primordial Sea. His story quest involves his younger brother Teucer visiting Liyue, highlighting Tartaglia's sense of family.
