Gameplay describes how players engage with a game, whether digital or tabletop. It forms the link between the player and the game, involving the player's efforts to overcome obstacles and the behavioral patterns shaped by the game's rules.

The term first emerged in the 1980s alongside video game development, originally referring only to video games, but it now also applies to tabletop games.

No single definition of gameplay is universally accepted. Different authors offer varying descriptions, though all center on player interaction. Some define it as the structures of interaction between the player, the game system, and other players, or as the interactive process between player and game.

Most theorists agree that gameplay is separate from a game’s graphics and audio. Others add more specific elements, such as a series of causally linked challenges in a simulated environment, or an experience involving cognitive tasks and emotions tied to motivation, performance, and completion. G. Frasca identifies three components: manipulation rules (what the player can do), goal rules (the game’s objective), and metarules (how the game can be adjusted or modified).

Gameplay can be categorized into types, including cooperative gameplay (two or more players working together, often on a team), asymmetric video games, emergent gameplay, and nonlinear gameplay.

Playability measures the quality of gameplay, reflecting the ease, amount, or duration a game can be played. Evaluation methods targeting games aim to improve design, while those targeting players aim to enhance the gaming experience.

Scholars analyze playability using different criteria. One framework defines it through properties like satisfaction, learning, efficiency, immersion, motivation, emotion, and socialization. Another breaks it into facets: intrinsic, mechanical, interactive, artistic, personal, and social.

Lore & Background
The term gameplay arose alongside video game development in the 1980s, initially used solely within the context of video games, though now it is also used for tabletop games. There is no consensus on the precise definition of gameplay; it has been defined differently by different authors, but all definitions refer to player interaction with a game. Examples include 'the structures of player interaction with the game system and with other players in the game' and 'the interactive gaming process of the player with the game.' Theorists agree that video game gameplay is distinct from graphics and audio elements.
