Devil Hunter (film)

Devil Hunter, released under multiple titles including *The Man Hunter*, *Mandingo Manhunter*, *Jungfrau unter Kannibalen*, and *Sexo Caníbal*, is a 1981 horror film. Jesús Franco directed it using the alias "Clifford Brown," and co-wrote the script with Julián Esteban, who wrote under the name "Julius Valery." The movie was not filmed consecutively with Franco’s other project, *Mondo Cannibale*; they are separate productions with no evidence of consecutive filming. It gained notoriety as one of the "video nasties" that faced a ban in the United Kingdom during the 1980s.

Lina Romay did not receive a co-directing credit on this film; she is not credited as co-director in any official sources. Franco’s first wife, Nicole Guettard, handled the editing. Pierre Guéry served as the film’s art director.

The film first appeared in West Germany on 5 December 1980 under the title *Jungfrau unter Kannibalen*, and in Spain as *Sexo Canibal*. It had theatrical releases in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy as *The Man Hunter*. Later, it reached UK video as *Devil Hunter* and US video as *Mandingo Manhunter*. In the early 1980s, it was banned in the UK as a video nasty.

Critical reception has been harsh. Kurt Dahlke of DVD Talk described it as a "horrible, trying piece of dreck that should have remained legendary and lost," though he added that "it's pretty fun stuff." DVD Verdict labeled the film "trash," noting that "the storyline is threadbare and the characters are idiots (the horrid dubbing makes their dialogue endlessly entertaining) but Jess Franco does not hesitate in blasting out the nipples and bloodshed."
