Premise
The story begins with Angela Throgmorton, a respectable matron living alone, finding a basket on her doorstep containing Old Tom, an orange one-eyed tomcat with a bandaged leg and a crossed-patch on his chest. Angela is drawn to his charm, though his rebellious personality soon emerges while he retains good-natured charm. Both are oddball eccentrics who create mischief in their suburb. Recurring characters include Old Tom's best friend Lucy, Angela's snobby friend Lavinia Winterberry, and a troublesome boy named Billy.
Production
Production was announced in November 1999, when Yoram Gross-EM.TV collaborated with Millimages to adapt the book series. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation and TF1 commissioned the series for a 2001 delivery. Yoram Gross-EM.TV and Millimages produced and handled animation services, while AAC Kids held worldwide distribution except for Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, French-speaking territories, and Germany, where Yoram Gross-EM.TV and EM.TV & Merchandising distributed. After the series ended and AAC Kids closed in 2003, Millimages and EM.TV & Merchandising assumed worldwide distribution. In May 2008, Studio 100 International took over distribution after acquiring Flying Bark Productions and EM.Entertainment.
