Production and broadcast

The animated series Foot 2 Rue was conceived as an early example of inclusive storytelling, aiming to depict children from working-class neighborhoods playing street football. Co-creator Giorgio Welter shared this vision in a 2023 podcast. The show’s concept came from Stefano Benni’s Italian novel La Compagnia dei Celestini, about kids fleeing an orphanage to compete in a rebellious street football tournament. In Italy, it aired as La Compagnia dei Celestini on Rai 2 starting November 24, 2005, with 26 half-hour episodes broadcast daily on the program Random. Production involved De Mas & Partners, Télé Images, Rai Fiction, and France 3, with animation handled in Milan and Paris. The series was distributed internationally as Foot 2 Rue in France and Street Football in English-speaking markets. A fourth-season revival, Foot 2 Rue – Le Retour, was co-produced by Zodiak Kids and Monello Productions, scheduled for release at the end of 2021.
