How a dragon chooses its rider and grants a signet.

In the Empyrean series, cadets in Basgiath's Riders Quadrant hope to be chosen by a dragon, but not every cadet is picked. A dragon that bonds with a rider lets that rider develop a magical power called a signet.

Notable bonds

Violet Sorrengail is the first rider bonded to two dragons, Tairn and Andarna. Because Tairn and Sgaeyl are mated, Violet and Xaden Riorson can talk to each other through their dragons. Xaden has a second signet because Sgaeyl was first bonded to his grandfather. In Onyx Storm, Andarna breaks her bond with Violet to go with the irids.
