Hari Seldon Hologram
A pre-recorded echo of destiny appearing only when history threatens to derail.
The Hari Seldon Hologram is not a living presence, but a series of pre-recorded messages left by the mathematician to guide humanity through its darkest hours. First appearing in the short story "Foundation" (published May 1942, later retitled "The Encyclopedists"), these projections serve as the narrative backbone of the original trilogy, revealing a "Seldon Crisis" whenever the Galactic Empire's collapse threatens to derail Seldon's Plan. While Hari Seldon himself appeared only once in person, in the first part of Foundation ("The Psychohistorians"), his recorded voice has echoed through Foundation and Empire (1952) and Second Foundation (1953), ensuring that even after his death in 12,069 GE, his calculations remain the ultimate authority on Terminus.

Lore & Background
The hologram originates from Seldon's work as a mathematics professor at Streeling University on Trantor. Using psychohistory, an algorithmic science predicting the future in probabilistic terms, Seldon calculated that the Galactic Empire would fall into chaos lasting thirty thousand years. To shorten this dark age to a mere millennium, he established the Foundation on Terminus. The hologram first appears in "Foundation" (1942), the first story written for the series, which became "The Encyclopedists".
Seldon's prerecorded messages go on to appear in Foundation and Empire (1952) and Second Foundation (1953), and in the later sequels Foundation's Edge (1982) and Foundation and Earth (1986). These appearances are strictly timed interventions known as "Seldon Crises," revealing that the Foundation's struggles were predicted all along. The character was fleshed out significantly in the prequels Prelude to Foundation (1988) and Forward the Foundation (1993), which detail his life from birth on Helicon in 11,988 GE until his death.
Reader's Guide
The hologram functions exclusively as a reactive mechanism for crisis management. It does not offer daily guidance or new data; it activates only when the Foundation faces a statistical precipice that threatens to extend the period of chaos beyond one thousand years. When triggered, the projection contextualizes current disasters within Seldon's long-term equations, forcing leaders to accept harsh necessities. In the 1942 story "Foundation", Seldon appears as a prerecorded hologram near the end." This device ensures that even without his physical intervention after 1 FE, the Plan proceeds. It is a tool of inevitability, reminding the Foundation that their free will exists only within the narrow corridors Seldon mapped out before his death.
