Notiolofos
Extinct Antarctic ungulate from the Eocene epoch.
Notiolofos is an extinct genus of litoptern ungulate belonging to the family Sparnotheriodontidae. It lived during the Eocene in what is now Antarctica. The genus includes two species: the type species, *N. arquinotiensis*, and *N. regueroi*.
The genus was first described in 2006 by Bond and colleagues as *Notolophus arquinotiensis*, based on a few fossil teeth. It was later discovered that the name *Notolophus* was already used for a moth genus, so Bond and colleagues renamed it *Notiolofos* in 2009. The second species, *N. regueroi*, was described in 2017 by Gelfo, López, and Santillana from a single fossil molar.
Fossils of *N. arquinotiensis* come from several layers of the La Meseta Formation on Seymour Island, Antarctica, and date from 55 to 34 million years ago. *N. regueroi* is known only from the Cucullaea I layer of the Upper Ypresian, about 53 million years old. When these animals lived, Antarctica was still linked to South America by a land bridge, a remnant of the supercontinent Gondwana.
*N. regueroi* was about the size of a sheep, with an estimated weight of 25 to 57 kilograms. *N. arquinotiensis* was much larger, weighing an estimated 400 kilograms—roughly the size of a muskox—and is thought to have been a browser.
Within the family Sparnotheriodontidae, *Notiolofos* is most closely related to *Victorlemoinea*, whose fossils have been found in the Upper Paleocene and Lower Eocene of Patagonia and the Itaboraí basin of Brazil.
